The images in this database are categorized based on several criteria:

About the Image Content

  • Disease type

About the Patient

  • Gender
  • Color

Written Comments

To select a criterion on which to search, check the box to the left of the criterion, then choose a specific item from the list. Some lists will cascade with a more specific list appearing to the right of the first list. For example, when you select dog, a list of dog breeds will appear.

You can only select one option from each list.

You can search for images based on several criteria and can link those criteria with either “and” or with “or”.

Or means you're looking for either of two (or more) criteria. For example dogs or liver disease will yield images about dogs and images about livers, but not necessarily in the same image. And means both criteria must be present. Searching on dogs and liver disease will yield images about dog livers.

After selecting your desired search criteria, click on the search button at the bottom of the page.

If no images are found, try using less specific search criteria.

You can also search by placing keywords in the caption text box or in the comments box.

Searches that are performed based on items selected from drop-down boxes are more specific than those selected from text written in the comments or caption boxes.

Image Display
All images that meet your selected criteria will be displayed as thumbnails.  Before executing your search, decide how many thumbnail images you want displayed at one time.  Between 12 to 120 images arranged in 1 to 10 rows can be displayed at once. If the search locates more images than you choose to display, back and forward arrows are displayed.

Click on the thumbnail to reveal the full-size image and metadata (information about the image) in a new browser window. You can toggle between the image and the metadata by clicking on the gray tabs at the top of the image.

The images in this database are optimized for display on a 1024 x 768 pixel monitor (full view). If you wish to view a smaller image, before, clicking on a thumbnail image, select "VGA Resolution" to see images optimized in size for a 640 x 480 display.

Image Filter
Many of these images are intended for use by animal health care students and professionals and graphically show animals with naturally occurring diseases. We do not wish to offend anyone by allowing accidental access to images that are deemed to be graphic in content.

In order to protect you from accidentally viewing images that you may find offensive, the image filter which will warn you of the presence of graphic images returned by a search, is turned on by default.

To view graphic images you must turn the image filter off. To do so click on the image filter link at the top of the search page and set your preferences.

To save an image, right click on the image and choose the save picture option.
